Kämpfe um das Kämpfen
More and more women are making their presence felt in martial arts. They are breaking with prevailing narratives in which non-male athletes in martial arts have too often only been perceived in the context of self-defense and fitness. The number of women getting involved in and around the ring has been on the rise for a long time. They fight, they dish it out - they take their place in the ring. And are often confronted with outdated gender roles, discrimination and sexism.
“Kämpfe um das Kämpfen” follows six female protagonists in six German cities and offers an insight into the feminist perspectives of professional fighters, trainers, amateurs and referees. Jonathan Funk accompanies female protagonists from the disciplines of Muay Thai, kickboxing and MMA for a year. In training, at home and at competitions.
